The Gary R. Merkamp Environmental Learning Center AKA: The Den.
Named after the Ross County Park District’s first Director, the Gary R. Merkamp Environmental Learning Center officially opened to the public on May 15th, 2026. A complete renovation began in 2024 and we are delighted to now share the space with the community. We invite you to check out the center, enjoy some fun interactive elements, or just hang out on the deck and relax in nature at the heart of Buzzard’s Roost.
The Den is located at the top of the hill right next to the shelter house. It can be accessed by walking up the maintenance road, taking a short leg of the Lookout Trail, or (our favorite) hiking up the KNZ Trail- all just under a half mile.
FAQ:
When is The Den open?
The Den has restricted hours while we develop our certified volunteer base. Check out the schedule below, or visit our events page for hours.
What age group is The Den appropriate for?
While a majority of the games and toys are suitable for elementary age, the Den is fun for all ages. There are nice chairs to relax in, good books to read, and hey, if it’s not your cup of tea, the deck has seating and gorgeous views of the pond and forest. Who wouldn’t enjoy that?
Where can I park?
Parking at Buzzard’s Roost is restricted to the main parking lot at the bottom of the hill. There is a short walk to get to the Den, but we think that adds to the fun. If you’re short on time, the trails are muddy, or you can’t get around quite so well, we recommend walking up the rarely traveled asphalt maintenance road. If you want to make a day of it, you have young ones, or you’re just young at heart, we recommend hiking up the KNZ Trail. The trail hosts a Storywalk, fairy house, and other fun interactive features to check out along the way. No matter your choice, expect to walk just under a half mile up the gradual hill.
Only handicap parking is available at the top of the hill. Vehicles must have a visible handicap placard and be parked in designated spots.
Can I reserve The Den for a party?
While we are certainly kicking around the idea, The Den is not reservable for parties and gatherings at this time.
Are there restrooms?
Public flush toilets are located right next door at the shelter house. There is also a water filling station at the shelter house to fill up those bottles for the hike back.
